Menorca. The second largest of the Balearic Islands. It’s restaurant focussed evening scene makes it a firm favourite with couples and families looking for a quieter holiday. And whilst it lacks the mountainous drama of its Balearic neighbours, (only the central peak of Monte Toro comes anywhere near), it is still just as beautiful through a camera lens or on an artist’s canvas. If not more so.
Menorca’s capital Mahon boasts one of the longest natural harbours in the world. At night, the luxury yachts and power boats donning it’s edge add an opulence to the scene. It’s second city, and former capital, Ciutadella, is a favourite amongst photographers and artists alike, with it’s 13th Century cathedral and a more typical Spanish influence. It’s old quarter, with dusty pastel shaded walls and moorish archictecture a photographers dream.
Thoroughout the island, many of the smaller towns are very much worth a visit and images of which are very popular with the more discerning traveller. Alaior and Es Mercadal are easily reached along the island’s busy main road (Me-1) yet a walk through these towns on market day instantly transport you to a timeless place.
There are many pretty resorts too, which despite so much tourism, still retain so much charm. Fornells on the windier northern coast is a pretty old fishermen’s village, whereas the purpose built resort of Binibeca in the south somehow manages to capture a real essence of a traditional Spanish village despite being only a few decades old.
And of course there’s the beaches. Many of which have been painted or photographed over the years for their beauty alone. Whilst some of the best family beaches can be found at the popular resorts of Cala Galdana, Son Bou, Son Parc, Arenal d’en Castell and Cala n Bosch – others take a little more effort to get to. The once seldom visited twin beaches Macarella and Macarelleta are now symbolic of Menorca, with their white washed sands, lapped by the crystal clear waters of The Mediterranean and framed by bright green pine trees and backed by the bluest of skies.
